Topic: The Development and Need for Integrity Commissions
His Honour will discuss the concept and development of integrity commissions in our legal system, with particular reference to the
creation of the inaugural Integrity Commission, ACT. The presentation will include reference to unique features of the ACT Integrity Commission which
are designed to safeguard the reputations of persons who may come before it as witnesses to avoid the denigration of such persons as we have recently
witnessed in our media.
The Hon Dennis Cowdroy AO QC was appointed as the first ACT Integrity Commissioner in 2019. Among his many appointments, his Honour was a Justice of the Federal Court of Australia (2006-2014), an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the ACT (2007 – 2014), Defence Force Judge-Advocate (2012-2017) and Chair of the Australian Electoral Commission (2015-2020). In addition to being the ACT Integrity Commissioner, his Honour is a Deputy President of the AAT, an Acting District Court Judge and an Appellate Member of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Mr Cowdroy received the Award of Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday 2019 Honours List for service to the law and to the judiciary.
The seminar will be held immediately prior to the AIAL AGM and is open to all members of the AIAL and to any interested members of the public.
